Moving tips
Practical advice on packing, loading and planning your move — to help your Enfield move go smoothly.
Before your move
- Declutter before you pack — sell, donate or recycle items you no longer need
- Gather packing supplies: boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, marker pens and furniture blankets
- Book your van in advance to secure the right size for your move
- Arrange parking at both addresses if needed — check for restrictions or permits
- Notify utilities, your council and anyone who needs your new address
- Pack an essentials box with tea, kettle, phone charger, toiletries and a change of clothes
Packing
Packing tips
Label everything
Label each box with the room it belongs to and a brief contents list. This saves hours when unpacking.
Wrap fragile items
Use bubble wrap or towels to protect glass, ceramics and electronics. Pack them tightly so they do not shift.
Disassemble large furniture
Take apart beds, tables and shelves before moving day. Keep screws and fittings in a labelled bag taped to the item.
Load heavy items first
Place large furniture and heavy boxes against the van bulkhead, then lighter items on top and towards the back.
Moving day
On the day
Plan your route
Check the route and parking at both ends. Allow extra time for traffic, especially during rush hour.
Load systematically
Load the van from front to back, heaviest to lightest. Secure everything to prevent shifting during transit.
Protect your belongings
Use blankets between furniture items to prevent scratches. Keep valuables and documents with you, not in the van.
Do a final check
Before leaving each property, walk through every room, cupboard and the loft to make sure nothing is left behind.
